About Us
Who We Are
The Grosse Pointe Democratic Club is a local political and social organization that is chartered by the Michigan Democratic Party.
We call ourselves the Grosse Pointe Democratic Club because geographically, the majority of our members live in one of the five Grosse Pointe communities, but we proudly cover a larger area than that. A significant number of our members live in Harper Woods or portions of Northeast Detroit that fall within the representation of our local state house, senate and county commission districts. Beyond our geographic diversity, our group is diverse professionally as our members have a wide range of career and life experiences.
Our membership includes architects, doctors, executives, factory workers, entrepreneurs, lawyers, teachers, corporate managers, university professors, journalists, public officials, small business owners, stay-at-home moms/dads and non-profit professionals to name just a sampling of professions. We’re diverse in age and life stage/situation as well as our members include high-school students, young singles, single parents, couples with kids in elementary, middle and high school, grandparents and retirees.
Our different experiences make our viewpoints more diverse as well, but we work hard to understand each other’s perspectives rather than try to create lock-step conformity. And in true Democratic fashion, we vote to determine the direction and decisions of the club.
What We Do
In addition to this website, the Grosse Pointe Democratic Club provides a variety of ways to stay informed and involved in local, county, state and national political discussions and campaigns. The following list describes a few:
We hold general meetings three times a year for all members and the general public, typically on the second Tuesday of the months of October, February and April. These meetings usually feature a guest speaker addressing current issues of public interest. Click on the calendar link to check on any upcoming meetings or events. A few recent speakers at club events have included:
-
•John Cherry, Lt. Governor of Michigan
-
•Ken Cockrel, Jr., Detroit City Council President
• Mark Brewer, Chairman of the Michigan Democratic Party
• Maryann McGuire, State of Michigan Board of Education
We publish a bi-monthly newsletter from September through May that’s a quick read and includes brief articles on local, state and national issues and announcements of upcoming club events. Click here to see our most recent newsletter.
Though discussion of public issues is important, we’re not just about talk. We support candidates and causes both financially and organizationally and are planning new initiatives on community projects.
We also make time to enjoy each other’s company and celebrate each other’s efforts at several social events we run every year. These include our Annual Summer Picnic and Fall Pasta Dinner Fundraiser.
Come check us out and see what we’re all about!
